Where is Kwathu Drama Group?
For years, Kwathu Drama Group has been a household name in Malawi's drama scene, entertaining audiences with their captivating Chichewa plays. However, the group's sudden disappearance from the public eye has left many wondering what happened to them.
According to Charles Mphoka, the group's current team leader, Kwathu Drama Group is still alive and kicking, despite being quiet in recent times. Mphoka attributed the group's hiatus to venue challenges, particularly the closure of the French Cultural Centre (Blantyre Cultural Centre).
Mphoka explained that the group's routine was to start a show at BCC, then move to districts like Mulanje and Lilongwe. However, with the closure of BCC, the group found it difficult to organize shows and travel to other places.
Despite the challenges, Mphoka assured that the group is not dormant, but rather, they are carrying out hired activities. He urged organizations to consider hiring the group for their events or commercial purposes.
Looking ahead, Mphoka emphasized the need for sponsorship to revitalize the drama scene in Malawi. He noted that the high costs of advertising, venue rental, and travel have made it difficult for theater groups to sustain themselves.
Associate Professor Zindaba Chisiza, a drama and theater studies expert, echoed Mphoka's sentiments, stressing that drama is not completely dead, but rather, it needs more advertising and promotion.
Blantyre Arts Festival director Thom Chibambo attributed the decline of drama to the rise of technology, which has shifted people's attention to television and social media. Chibambo emphasized the need for a new approach to drama and called for government intervention to support the arts.
The Poetry Association of Malawi vice-president, Daniel Zabuloni Dama, also lamented the challenges facing the poetry scene, citing the high costs of organizing events and the lack of support.
As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Kwathu Drama Group is still alive, and with the right support and sponsorship, they can once again take center stage and entertain audiences with their unique brand of Chichewa drama.
