University of Malawi Launches Postgraduate Music Program, Boosting Creative Industry
In a significant development, the University of Malawi is set to introduce its first postgraduate music program, commencing in July 2025. This move is part of a broader initiative to enhance the country's creative industry, which includes the introduction of six new arts degrees, encompassing various music disciplines.
The Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) has expressed enthusiastic support for the new program. Vita Chirwa, MUM leader, described the initiative as "huge" for the music industry, emphasizing the importance of formal education in enhancing artists' skills and advancing their music techniques.
"This will help a lot in skills development. Artists need formal education to advance their music techniques," Chirwa noted. The introduction of formal education opportunities is expected to nurture talent within the creative sector, providing a more robust framework for artists to thrive professionally.
The partnership between the University of Malawi and MUM demonstrates a commitment to fostering growth within the creative sector. As the industry continues to gain recognition, initiatives like these promise to provide valuable resources and educational pathways for aspiring musicians in Malawi.
